YouTube opens Masthead ads to licensed gambling operators
Google has changed its advertising rules. From 21 October 2026, licensed online gambling operators can buy campaigns in YouTube's Masthead.
What is the Masthead?
It is YouTube's most visible ad placement, at the top of the home feed. The format adapts to desktop, mobile and TV screens, and videos usually autoplay without sound.
- The change applies from 21 October 2026.
- Google's gambling ads policy still applies.
- A licence or certification is required in every country the campaign targets.
Strict conditions
Only advertisers that follow Google's gambling policy and hold a licence or certification in each targeted market can buy the Masthead. Unlicensed sites remain excluded.
Context
The change comes as criticism of gambling advertising grows in the UK, Australia and the US, and as Meta faces criticism, including from the UK Gambling Commission, over illegal ads. Read more about the Paf and Meta pilot.
Our advice
A big ad says nothing about wagering requirements. Compare the terms of any casino bonus or free spins offer before you accept it.
